There's been another incident involving pedestrians being struck by a car near a St. Paul college campus.

A 20-year-old Macalester College student is in critical condition and a second, aged 19, is also hospitalized after the pair was struck by a vehicle while walking crossing the street near the school on Tuesday afternoon.

The Pioneer Press reports the two women were taken to Regions Hospital with head injuries. The crash occurred at 3:25 p.m. as the students walked across Snelling Avenue near the corner of Lincoln Avenue. Police believe they were in a crosswalk when a Volkswagen Jetta struck the students.

The 35-year-old driver of the Jetta remained at the scene of the crash. The newspaper said that alcohol was not believed to be a factor in the crash. No citations or charges had been issued in the incident as of Wednesday evening. The incident remained under investigation.

In 2012, a French foreign exchange student at Macalester was struck and killed in the crosswalk at the intersection of Grand and Hamline. Cleo Louise Marie Thiberge, 19, had been in St. Paul only about a day at the time of the incident. A St. Paul woman received a 25-day sentence and a $150 fine in connection with the death.

Last November, friends Nick Bergeland and Bekka Peterson, both 22, were critically injured by a hit-and-run driver. The two, who were students at the University of St. Thomas, were getting out of a cab on Grand Avenue when they were struck by a passing car. Police say the driver never stopped. A woman was later arrested in connection with the accident, but she has never been charged.

WCCO reported that Peterson began recovering after being in a coma for a month. In March, KARE broadcast a story on a fundraiser for Peterson in her hometown of Farmington. The story said the accident had left the woman with a traumatic brain injury, permanent eye damage, a broken clavicle, a fractured skull, a shattered scapula and a torn ACL and MCL.
