Two men thrown into the water when their boat capsized during overnight storms managed to survive after swimming a mile to shore.
The men, aged 51 and 48, were sleeping on the anchored boat on Big Kandiyohi Lake, south of Willmar, when turbulent weather rolled in during the early hours of Sunday morning.
Police received a call of a possible capsized boat at 1:23 a.m., with strong winds having caused the boat to flip.
The Kandiyohi County Sheriff's Office says that both men entered the water underneath the boat, and immediately became separated.
The 48-year-old managed to swim a mile to the north shore of the lake, where he summoned help from the brother of the 51-year-old, calling 911 and taking out a pontoon to search for him.
But remarkably, the 51-year-old had also managed to swim a mile to the north shore, where he sought help at a local residence.
The older man was taken to a hospital with minor injuries, while the younger man had no injuries.
