For the first time ever, the Star Tribune says, two Minnesota authors received National Book Awards at an event in New York Wednesday night.

Louise Erdrich, who grew up in North Dakota but now lives in Minneapolis, won the award for "The Round House," the second book in a planned trilogy.

The Washington Post says the story is about an Ojibwe boy and his quest to avenge his mother's rape. Erdich, who is part Ojibwe, spoke in her tribal tongue and then switched to English as she dedicated her fiction award to "the grace and endurance of native people.”

The highly regarded author owns Birchbark Books near Lake of the Isles in Minneapolis.

William Alexander, a teacher at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, won the award for Young People’s Literature for his debut fantasy novel "Goblin Secrets."

"The way things are, are not the only possible way they can be. Stories are the first way we figured that out,” Alexander said at the award ceremony, according to the New York Times.
