Two people have died after their car crashed into a tree in Northeast Minneapolis in the early hours of Saturday.

Police told KARE 11 that a vehicle collided with a tree at around 2.15 a.m. near the intersection of 37th Avenue and University Avenue Northeast.

The Star Tribune reports that five people were in the vehicle at the time, with the two in the front seat being the ones killed.

The front-seat passenger, a woman, was pronounced dead at the scene, while the male driver died as he was being taken to hospital, the newspaper notes.

According to FOX 9, all three people in the back seat were taken to Hennepin County Medical Center with injuries, but they are expected to survive.

The Minneapolis Police Department traffic unit is investigating what caused the crash, while the names of the two victims will be released by the medical examiner's office.
