Didn't we just have an election?

Yes, but a couple of Minnesota lawmakers who were re-elected in November have already accepted other jobs and decided to leave the Capitol. Gov. Mark Dayton announced Tuesday that special elections will be held Feb. 12th to fill those two House seats. If a primary election is necessary in either district, it will be on Jan. 29.

Terry Morrow (DFL-St. Peter) and Steve Gottwalt (R-St. Cloud) formally submitted their resignations on Monday, but had announced their plans earlier. Morrow is headed to Chicago to take a job with the Uniform Law Commission.

Gottwalt is leaving to work for a medical imaging company as its director of state legislative policy. He insists his position with the Center for Diagnostic Imaging is not a lobbying job, as was widely reported last week. He tells the St. Cloud Times he decided to give up his seat at the Capitol because the demands of holding both jobs would be too great. But some DFLers tell the Times Gottwalt was likely under pressure -- or soon would be -- over possible conflicts between the jobs.
