U of M alumni reject magazine's ugly campus assessment

After the University of Minnesota's Twin Cities campus was named one of the ugliest in the nation by Travel + Leisure Magazine, many jumped to the defense of their alma mater.

"I think we have a really beautiful campus -- of course we have a few blemishes and rough spots. I think every university does," alum Jason Schmuck, a former campus tour guide, told FOX 9.

"There are some ugly buildings in the medical complex, sure, but that hardly warrants calling the entire school ugly," another ex-U of M tour guide and 2010 grad, Madeline Daniels, commented on Travel + Leisure's website. "It’s beautiful in the fall,” she told the Star Tribune.

The television station compiled several photos from viewers that aim to disprove the ugly assessment.

Not only do alumni disagree with the magazine, but one former student says they got it all wrong.

The article's short five-sentence summary on the U's campus said, "Take, for example, the Coffman Memorial [Union] Building: the only feature that could make it look more industrial would be the addition of smokestacks."

But architect and U of M alum Ann Voda told FOX 9 that "the photo to illustrate their point wasn't of Coffman Union at all. It was of the building behind Coffman Union."

The university wouldn't give an official response to the magazine's evaluation, but spokesman Chuck Tombarge pointed out to the Star Tribune that the U ranked No. 50 on The Best Colleges' list of the most amazing college campuses for 2013, calling it one of the "prettiest college campuses in the country."
