U of M in the red after alcohol sales
Despite the nearly $1 million generated from selling beer and wine at Gopher football games last season, the University of Minnesota actually lost about $16,000 from facilitating the sales.
According to records obtained by the Associated Press, the university incurred significant expenses from hiring additional police and security, renting equipment for tents and other facilities, along with half of the money that went directly to Aramark Corp., which had the contract to sell alcohol.
The University says turning a profit was never the intent of selling alcohol, however a small profit is expected this year.
Rep. Dan Schoen, DFL-St. Paul Park, proposed a bill that would also allow alcohol sales at Gopher hockey and basketball games, but the university says it's not quite on board with expanding sales just yet.
