A University of Minnesota student was robbed at gunpoint on the first day of the spring semester, police say.

A crime alert released by the U's police department says the aggravated robbery occurred at 10 p.m. Tuesday near the Pillsbury Court Apartments, at the intersection of 11th Ave. SE and Sixth St. SE.

The victim told police he was approached by two suspects, one of whom displayed a gun and demanded his valuables.

He handed over cash and his ID, with the robbers fleeing southbound. Police do not have any detailed descriptions of the suspects at this point.

Students were made aware of the incident through a "Timely Reminder" issued by campus police, with FOX 9 reporting this is the first one that has been issued since Dec. 14.

That one followed a spate of armed robberies targeting U of M students, with the Star Tribune saying three incidents in the space of a few weeks.

In the last of these, a 19-year-old was assaulted and a gun pointed at his head north of Dinkytown late at night by three men.

University police figures show that crime around Twin Cities campuses has been falling over the past decade.
