The University of Minnesota has a pest problem--thieves that help themselves to a free "Christmas" tree on campus.

KARE 11 reports five landscape evergreen trees were cut down around the holiday's last year, including a 20-footer that was chopped down to five feet off the ground. The trees can cost the university as much as $500 to replace.

To deter thieves, landscapers on campus are spraying trees with skunk spray, a method that was suspended about five years ago.

It won't make light-rail construction go away, but new technology may help ease the ride to class at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities campuses. The Campus Connector and other shuttles provide more than 3.7 million rides per year. New QR codes will help riders with smart phones plan their trips more precisely.

Rioters overturned cars, started fires and looted stores in Dinkytown after the Gophers won the NCAA hockey tournament in 2002 and 2003. Copper is still a common target, but the Brainerd Dispatch says thieves nowadays are taking whatever they can find. And the perpetrators are getting smarter about covering up the crime.
