The University of Minnesota is now investigating what was initially reported as a rape on campus as a "student crisis intervention case."

The Star Tribune reports that U of M Vice President Pam Wheelock said police do not believe the 18-year-old student was subjected to an armed assault. This is after the student initially reported on Monday afternoon that she had been sexual assaulted by two strangers at knifepoint in her dorm room at Sanford Hall on Sunday.

The university issued an appeal for information on Tuesday, but on Wednesday campus police said they were no longer investigating it as a "stranger assault."

In a statement given to BringMeTheNews on Friday, the U said it is now being considered a student crisis intervention case.

"The UMPD is no longer investigating the reported incident of an armed sexual assault by strangers," a spokeswoman said. "As stated earlier, there is no immediate or on-going threat to public safety related to this case."

"At this time, the University’s primary concern is to support the student who reported the incident and to protect her right to privacy," it added.

The U has said police and the Aurora Center – which helps the victims and survivors of sexual assault, stalking and domestic abuse – is providing the student with support.

Wheeler would not say whether police think if a crime occurred or not, telling the Star Tribune that the priority is getting the student in question the help they need.
