A pilot escaped injury when the ultralight aircraft he was flying crashed in northeastern Minnesota.

The incident was reported at 8:45 a.m. Sunday, when St. Louis County responders were called to the 5000 block of Townline Road in Colvin Township, southeast of Virginia.

Robert Kangas, 62, had taken off in the single seat ultralight from his property and about a minute later had crashed it into a swampy ditch just west of his home, traveling a couple of hundred yards before coming down.

Fortunately, Kangas was uninjured in the incident.

The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office says "operator inexperience" is believed to be a factor in the crash.

The incident remains under investigation.
