University of Iowa named No. 1 party school

Nothing says party like Iowa.

That's according to the 126,000 students surveyed nationwide for the annual Princeton Review ranking of the country's top party schools. The Hawkeyes rose to the party-school pinnacle after finishing No. 2 last year to West Virginia University.

Iowa City officials are not toasting. They say they have made efforts recently to curb binge drinking on campus and downtown, the Associated Press reported.

Statistics indicate that student drinking is actually decreasing, university officials note.

A school spokesman tells the Des Moines Register, “In each of the last four years, alcohol harm to our students has decreased. It is, frankly, still too high. We are heartened, though, by the steady progress we have made, and are committed to continuing this progress.”

But the AP notes: "Packed Iowa City bars blaring dance music, off-campus house parties and tailgating before Hawkeye football games are as much a part of Iowa's culture as the cornfields that surround the city."

The University of Wisconsin-Madison was No. 8 on the list. University officials there were not pleased to be on the list, either.

Two other Big Ten schools made the top 20: No. 3 University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Urbana, Ill.; and No. 9 Penn State.
