The University of Wisconsin school system is cutting dozens of positions to help cope with budget cuts, which could also affect students with on-campus jobs, reports note.

Thirty-six administrative and academic affairs positions have been eliminated across the UW System, spokesman Alex Hummel told The Associated Press. But no employees were laid off – the eliminated positions came from shifting employees into vacant positions, along with retirements, UW System President Ray Cross told the AP.

This will help the UW System deal with budget cuts and is part of its long-term streamlining plan, WSAU notes.

This comes after state lawmakers cut $250 million from the UW System in the new state budget, WTMJ reported, one of the largest budget cuts ever to the university system, Wisconsin Public Radio noted.

The budget cut has forced several UW campuses to lay off workers, eliminate vacant positions or offer buyouts to senior employees, reports note.

It has also forced the UW System's two-year colleges to restructure and consolidate, resulting in the system cutting more than 80 positions, Wisconsin Public Radio said.

"So what we're going to see is more unified admissions, unified recruiting, more unified financial aid. And that sort of thing is also going to help with regionalized administration as well," UW-Marathon County dean Keith Montgomery told WSAU.

The state budget cut could also affect students who have on-campus jobs, the Journal Sentinel reports. Some schools have already cut on-campus jobs, including at UW-Milwaukee, where all undergrad employees in the College of Letters & Science were eliminated July 1 – adding up to a savings of $217,186, the Journal Sentinel says.
