St. Thomas Public Safety: Armed robbers punch student, steal phones

Two University of St. Thomas students were robbed at gunpoint early Sunday morning, according to an alert from the university's public safety.

The alert says the students – a male and female – were at the intersection of Grand Avenue and Howell Street around 2 a.m. Sunday. The Pioneer Press says two suspects approached the students from behind then one suspect punched the male student in the face, knocking him to the ground.

According to the paper, a victim said the second suspect took out a gun and said, "Black lives matter. Give me your wallet."

Police told the paper they do not believe the suspects were affiliated with the Black Lives Matter organization.

The Pioneer Press reports the suspects then stole the man's money, bank card and iPhone. They also stole the woman's phone and purse before running away, the paper says.

St. Thomas describes the suspects as tall, slender black males. They say one wore a North Face vest, the other wore a black jacket.

The St. Paul Police are investigating. Officials at St. Thomas ask anyone with any information regarding the robbery to contact the police at 651-291-1111.

A similar incident happened in October. St. Thomas' public safety says an armed male robber stole a female student's purse and phone then fled. That incident occurred a few blocks away from the most recent robbery.

Public safety advises people to walk in groups, stay in well-lit areas and pay attention to their surroundings. They say if anything bad happens, remember what the suspects look like and call the police immediately.
