A group of than 100 veterans wearing "silkies" hiked through the Twin Cities Saturday to raise awareness for military suicides and post-traumatic stress disorder.

The event – "22 with 22 for the 22" – is a 22 kilometer hike (13.6 miles) with people carrying 22-kilogram (48.5 pounds) packs in honor of the 22 soldiers and military veterans who take their own life every day in the United States.

The 13.6-mile walk/bar crawl started near the Mall of America and ended at Loring Park in Minneapolis – and it was all done wearing "silkies" – very short training shorts made famous by the Marines.

Medically retired Marine Capt. Donny O'Malley began the "22 with 22 for the 22" movement in July in San Diego, California, in an effort to bring some humor to a serious issue, the Marine Corps Times reported.

The description of the San Diego event says the march is meant "To get veterans and our supporters together, to put weight on our backs and feel nostalgic, to laugh, to drink, to party, and remind us all that our camaraderie and brotherhood will never die."

Since the first "22 with 22 for the 22" event, 2o additional hikes have been held across the country, KSTP says.

The organization is also raising money to help pay for transportation to silkie hikes for veterans. To donate, click here.
