One person died in the parking lot of an apartment complex after being shot Monday evening on St. Paul's East Side.

Saint Paul Police Department says 911 callers reported shots fired in the parking lot of the apartment building – the Pine Tree Apartments – located on the 800 block of Hazel Street North around 5:30 p.m.

Responding officers arrived to find a male with an apparent gunshot wound lying on the ground. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later by St. Paul Fire medics.

As officers secured the scene, a Minnesota State Patrol helicopter was launched to assist in the search of the surrounding neighborhood with hopes of finding the shooter. No arrests had been made as of Monday night.

Homicide detectives are in the process of interviewing potential witnesses and securing any potential surveillance video from the area. Police say the shooting does not appear to be random.

It marks the 16th homicide in St. Paul this year. The victim's identity has not been released.

Anyone with information is urged to contact St. Paul police at 651-266-5650.
