Victim in Soundbar shooting dies; community worries about violence

One of the nine people wounded in a shooting at a Minneapolis nightclub in early August has died from his injuries.

Dion Darnell Nathaniel Toney, 27, of Minneapolis, died Sunday night of complications from multiple gunshot wounds, the Hennepin County Medical Examiner said Thursday. The manner of death is homicide.

Toney was shot Aug. 8 at the 400 Soundbar nightclub in Minneapolis – the same incident that injured Minnesota Vikings defensive tackle Linval Joseph, who was struck in the calf. The nightclub, which was the site of numerous violence incidents over the years, closed shortly after the shooting.

Investigators "are making headway" in their search for the shooter, Minneapolis police spokesman John Elder told KARE 11. However, he wouldn't confirm earlier reports that said the shooting was believed to be gang related.

Hospital lockdown

Toney was brought to Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC) following the shooting, and he died there about six weeks later.

On the same night Toney was pronounced dead, there was a brief lockdown at the hospital after a person was seen with a weapon on the sidewalk nearby, KSTP reports. The lockdown was lifted about a half-hour later when the suspect was arrested on weapons charges.

Although officials will not confirm the Soundbar shooting was gang related, police said after the shooting the gunman had an intended target, and sources have said Toney, who is a suspected member of the Bogus Boys gang, was that target, the Star Tribune says.

Sources told KSTP the man who was arrested outside the hospital had come to grieve for Toney and may have brought the gun planning to get retaliation for his death.

Sunday's incident was the fourth reported gun-related incident outside the hospital this year, KSTP notes. In the wake of recent incidents, HCMC officials said they have partnered with community members so they can better understand what's happening in surrounding neighborhoods in the event something "spills over" near the hospital, WCCO reports.

Community blames gangs

Another round of violence Tuesday morning may have also been sparked by Toney's death. Three people were shot at the Moto Mart gas station in south Minneapolis, KARE 11 says. One of the victims was listed in critical condition.

The Star Tribune says some believe the shooting may have been in retaliation for Toney's death.

Community members have demanded the chance to speak with Minneapolis Mayor Betsy Hodges in the wake of the recent violence – several shootings in the last week have killed three people and injured at least 16, which some believe is related to the city's gangs, the Star Tribune reports in a separate story.

Ferome Brown, a community activist who works to steer young people away from gangs, told the Star Tribune the Bogus Boys gang has been in a "long-simmering struggle" with other South Side gangs.
