Victim in train-pedestrian crash identified as 13-year-old boy

The tragic incident happened on Friday.

Authorities have identified the victim of a fatal train-pedestrian collision in Coon Rapids as a 13-year-old boy.

Chason Chivers Jr., of Coon Rapids, was killed when he was truck by a Northstar commuter train in the north metro around 6:45 p.m. Friday evening.

The incident remains under investigation by local police and the Metro Transit Police Department.

There were about 50 passengers on the train at the time of the collision. At this stage, it's believed that Chivers Jr. was walking along the tracks with another person, and was hit as he tried to cross.

KSTP reports that a memorial has sprung up near the site of the crash.

A GoFundMe set up to help the Chivers family has so far raised more than $1,500.

Chivers' mother, Kelli, has paid tribute to her son on Facebook, saying: "You are everything, we grew up together, learned together, laughed together, and cried together. 

"You’ve taught me how to love, be patient, and lead the way."
