Victim, officer identified in fatal Lake Elmo shooting

Benjamin Evans, 23, died in the shooting.

The suicidal man shot dead by police in Lake Elmo this week has been identified along with the officer who shot him.

Benjamin William Evans, 23, of Lake Elmo, was the man killed in the officer-involved shooting Thursday morning, the Ramsey County Medical Examiner announced.

And the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) confirmed on Friday afternoon that the officer who shot Evans "multiple times" was Deputy Brian Krook, who is now on standard administrative leave.

Krook has been with the Washington County Sheriff's Office for eight years.

Evans' family is from Creve Couer, Missouri, which is where his funeral is being held on Sunday.

His obituary reveals he was a firefighter and an EMT, something he was "very proud and passionate" about, and also "especially loved playing hockey."

His Facebook page says he was an EMT for the Mayo Clinic medical transport.

He was shot multiple times

According to the BCA, police were called to the intersection of Lake Elmo Avenue and 34th Street North just after midnight Thursday, with Evans said to be suicidal.

Armed with a gun, Evans told officers he wanted to kill himself, with officers making attempts to persuade him to put down the gun.

"At one point," the BCA's press release says, "Deputy Krook discharged his firearm, striking Evans multiple times."

Evans was taken by ambulance to Regions Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

A handgun was recovered from near Evans' body along with a police less-lethal beanbag gun – which the BCA says had not been fired.

Body and dash cameras have captured "portions of the incident," but not all of it, the BCA said.

The ACLU of Minnesota says that Evans' death is "once again a reminder of the limitations of law enforcement in responding to mental health crises."
