Victims killed in crash caused by fleeing driver in Fergus Falls identified as husband and wife

Two people killed when a driver fleeing police crashed into their vehicle have been identified as husband and wife from Fergus Falls. 

Steven J. Christianson, 72, and Diane L. Christianson, 71, were traveling together northbound on Union Ave. last Friday around 6:42 p.m. when they were broadsided by a driver who ran a stop sign while being chased by authorities. 

The crash happened at the intersection of Union Ave. and Cavour Ave. in Fergus Falls, with 30-year-old Cody Frietag, of Fergus Falls, fleeing deputies on eastbound Cavour. 

According to the Otter Tail County Sheriff's Office, Frietag was wanted on outstanding warrants and he fled when deputies attempted to pull him over. He suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries and was taken to a hospital in Fargo.

The police pursuit began after deputies set up a meeting with Frietag by posing as an acquaintance. Frietag arrived at the meeting location and then fled towards downtown Fergus Falls. 

The Star Tribune reports that Frietag has an extensive criminal record, including convictions for theft, drugs, property damage and drunk driving. He was also driving with a revoked license.
