Target CEO Brian Cornell was on CNBC's "Squawk Box," and took a couple minutes to address the controversy over the retailer's bathroom stance – and the calls for boycott that followed.

Last month, Target announced its support for allowing transgender people to use restrooms that match a person’s gender identity – as opposed to someone’s biological sex. Within days, The American Family Association called for a boycott, saying the policy puts women and girls at risk.

More than 1.2 million people have signed the group's online petition, but Target has said it "firmly stands behind" the inclusiveness of its policy.

Cornell echoed that sentiment on CNBC, comparing it to Target getting criticized for being one of the first to use African-American models decades ago. He also said more than 1,400 stores currently have a family restroom, and they're "committed" to making sure that option is available in all locations.

"We took a stance, and we're going to continue to embrace our belief of diversity and inclusion, and just how important that is for our company," Cornell said. "But we're also going to make sure our focus on safety is unwavered."
