Video: Minneapolis man pulls loaded gun in back of squad car

Police released surveillance video this week of an uncuffed man who pulled a loaded gun on an officer late last year.

According to an earlier report, an intoxicated Wesley Rogers, 21, was seen harassing a woman at 7th St. S. and Nicollet Mall in downtown Minneapolis shortly after 4 p.m. on Dec. 4.

Two Metro Transit police officers responded to the incident. A pat-down search by one of the officers found an open bottle of liquor.

Instead of placing Rogers under arrest or transporting him to detox, the officers decided to take Rogers to his home in north Minneapolis.

Video obtained by KSTP shows what happened next:

In the police report, the two transit officers said they heard the sound of a "metal clunk" come from the back seat while driving. Once pulled over, they found Rogers holding a loaded Rossi .38 special revolver.

Officers were able to quickly subdue Rogers and place him in handcuffs. No shots were fired.

Rogers pleaded guilty to carrying a pistol without a permit, a gross misdemeanor, on March 7.

In an interview with KSTP, Metro Transit Police Chief John Harrington calls the incident a "lapse" caused by a "rookie officer," who had only been on the job for two months.
