Video: Sea lion grabs girl and pulls her into the water

Officials are calling the behavior of the girl and her family "reckless."

Don't feed wild animals.

That's the message from officials in Richmond, British Columbia, after a girl was pulled into a river by a sea lion over the weekend. Michael Fujiwara posted video of the incident to his YouTube account. Watch it below – with the incident happening around 1:30.

The roughly 2-minute video shows the sea lion swimming near the wharf, checking out the people on the dock. Then, moments after a girl sits on the edge of the dock, the sea lion jumps up and grabs her, pulling her into the murky waters of the Fraser River.

A man quickly jumps in and gets the girl out of the water, and according to Fujiwara no one was injured in the incident.

Robert Kiesman, who is the chair of the Steveston Harbour Authority where the incident happened, told CBC News there are signs everywhere warning people not to feed the animals, calling the peoples' behavior "reckless."

"You wouldn't go up to a grizzly bear in the bush and hand him a ham sandwich, so you shouldn't be handing a thousand-pound wild mammal in the water slices of bread," Kiesman said. "And you certainly shouldn't be letting your little girl sit on the edge of the dock with her dress hanging down after the sea lion has already snapped at her once. Just totally reckless behavior."
