Jake Heitman has been featured in Bring Me The News stories a few times in the past, but usually for his close encounters with tornadoes in Minnesota. This time, however, a trip in search of Mother Nature's fury came to a crashing halt. Literally.
"It happened so fast, I was driving to an active tornado warning south of Goodridge," said Heitman, who was storm chasing in northwestern Minnesota on Thursday. "Out of nowhere a buck decides to cross the road and unfortunately we collided. The air bags went off and everything in my vehicle flew forward.
"When I got out I noticed the engine was on fire and my first thought was to get all my camera equipment out," he told Bring Me The News. "It was lightly raining at the time so the fire didn't spread and it put itself out."
The impact was so violent that the hood of the vehicle unlatched flew into the windshield, blocking Heitman's view. Fortunately, he was able to get the car to the shoulder.
"I was a little shocked at what just happened because the damage was so bad. I knew right away that the car was totaled," said Heitman. "Luckily for myself I only had minor bruises on my arms from the air bag. Very sore the following day, but it's manageable."
You can watch the video of the sudden impact right here, though be warned that there is NSFW language, which Heitman attributed to being in shock.
