Video: Troopers chase man scaling Minnesota Capitol dome

The Star Tribune has obtained surveillance video of a man who scaled the Minnesota Capitol dome last fall and eluded state troopers.

The video shows a man in what appears to be a gray hooded sweatshirt climbing to the top of the 223-foot-high dome, scrambling down a ladder and scampering around the building's exterior – at one point ducking behind towering carved eagles to avoid troopers who were trying to apprehend him.

The man ultimately escaped capture by climbing down scaffolding that had been erected for workers who were repairing windows as part of renovation on the aging Capitol, the newspaper reports.

A spokesman for the highway patrol, which provides security at the building, warned that anyone who climbs the Capitol risks trespassing charges and puts their lives and troopers' lives at risk.

In a similar incident last fall, a 21-year-old Roseville, Minn., man who police said was drunk scaled the outside of the Wisconsin state Capitol and smashed a fifth-floor window to get into the building.
