Eating, napping and football--followed by shopping--kept most people busy on Thanksgiving Day, but many joined volunteer and service programs before their own dinners.

Volunteers were on the job starting at 2 a.m. to prepare and then deliver 18,500 warm Thanksgiving Day dinners though the Meals on Wheels program. KSTP reported that the 2,500 volunteers rolled up their collective sleeves and went to work on a veritable production line at the cafeteria at Cretin-Durham Hall High School in St. Paul. They put together the traditional meal with all the trimmings: turkey, dressing, potatoes, peas, com, cranberries, rolls, pumpkin pie and milk. Volunteers then delivered the dinners to more than 2,700 families in need.

TC Daily Planet compiled an extensive list of non profit groups and volunteers that offered free meals to community members, including the Union Gospel Mission in St. Paul and the Marie Sandvik Center in Minneapolis.

The Associated Press reported that 4,000 walkers thought about the hungry before they ate their own Thanksgiving dinners. The sixth annual Walk to End Hunger inside the Mall of America raised $305,000 for agencies that work to meet hunger needs in the Twin Cities.

Since 2008, the Walk to End Hunger has raised more than $1.5 million.
