Vote Steer: Residents of MN city rally around passed-over interim chief

Officer Scott Steer has served as interim chief for the Hawley Police Department since mid-March.

It's his second time serving as "acting chief" in the past few years, WDAY says. He actually applied for the permanent position to be chief – but was turned down.

“It's a bit of a disappointment, but for me it's business as usual. I love the position, I love where I'm at and the community I work for," Steer told WDAY.

Instead, the city is considering two candidates – one from Princeton, Minnesota, the other from Columbus, Georgia, WDAY notes.

But the community around Steer isn't standing pat.

Residents in the city of about 2,000 people started a petition asking the city council to consider what the citizens want in a new chief – and what they want is Steer to get the job.

As of Tuesday morning, it had 272 signatures and 69 comments, many saying it would be a disservice to Hawley to not name Steer chief. The goal is to reach 1,000 signatures, Valley News Live reports.

People are also voicing their stance on the Concerned Citizens for Hawley Facebook page, which retired Hawley police officer Tom Taylor created for people to share their concerns about the city, a post says.

Steer told WDAY he's not going anywhere and he just hopes people will be happy with whatever ends up happening.

The city clerk told the news station the city has never gotten a petition like this before, so it may meet to see if it will influence its decision. The city plans to choose a new chief in the next few months.
