VP Biden to campaign for Clinton, Rep. Nolan in Minnesota, reports say

Uncle Joe is coming to Duluth to sway people to vote Democrat.

Vice President Joe Biden is coming to Minnesota on Friday, according to reports.

He'll be stopping in Duluth to campaign for Democrat Hillary Clinton and Rep. Rick Nolan, the Democratic incumbent in Minnesota's Eighth Congressional District, sources told the Star Tribune and the Duluth News Tribune.

Details about his visit, including where and when he'll be in Duluth, haven't been released. GoMN has reached out to party leaders for more details.

It's tight in the Eighth

Biden's visit to the Eighth District comes as Rep. Nolan is facing another tight challenge from Republican Stewart Mills.

In 2014, Nolan beat Mills by just a few thousand votes. And this year's race is expected to be just as close, with a recent KSTP poll showing Mills leads Nolan by four points. (Note: 14 percent of voters are still undecided, so the race could really go either way, KSTP says.)

That makes the Eighth District one of a few races across the country that has the potential of flipping from Democrat to Republican.

All this has helped it become one of the most watched races in the country, and has attracted some of the highest outside spending of any other race. WCCO is reporting more than $10.5 million has been donated from outside of Minnesota.

This isn't the first time Biden has campaigned for Nolan. Back in October 2014, he touted Nolan in Duluth and Hibbing, the Duluth News Tribune says. During his trip, Biden also praised "The Duluth Model" for its work to end domestic violence.

Trump is a favorite in the Eighth

Not only is the vice president throwing his support behind Nolan, but he'll also be touting Clinton on his visit to the Eighth District, reports say. In recent weeks, Biden hasn't shied away from criticizing Republican Donald Trump, suggesting he'd fight him for the things he's said about women and warns of a "nightmare" presidency if Trump is elected, CNN says.

But Trump is pretty popular in the Eighth District. While most polls show Clinton leading Trump by several points in Minnesota, that's not the case in the Northland. KSTP's poll shows Trump has a 12-point lead over Clinton in the Eighth (and the publication says because the top of the Democratic ticket is so unpopular, it may end up hurting Nolan in his race).

The Star Tribune reported last month that Trump's pledge to help people who've fallen behind (like those on the Iron Range) has made him more popular in the Eighth than in any other part of Minnesota. Trump even has the support from some Democrats, many of whom favored Bernie Sanders over Clinton in the caucuses, the paper said.

GoMN will update this story with more information once details about Biden's visit are confirmed. Biden's visit comes the same week as two presidential candidates plan stops in Minnesota. Green Party candidate Jill Stein is scheduled to speak at Macalester College on Wednesday, while Libertarian Gary Johnson will hold a rally in Shakopee Thursday.

As for Republican Donald Trump, the Minnesota Republican Party’s website doesn’t list any events planned prior to the election.
