Waiting for Walmart: Plymouth wonders if retail giant is sleeping
Since Walmart bought the Four Seasons shopping complex in November 2010, Plymouth residents and officials have been waiting for the transformation that comes when the retail giant saunters into your town.
And they're still waiting.
The Star Tribune says city officials have not heard from Walmart for more than eight months, waiting for the company to submit an application to build at the site of the vacant Four Seasons Mall, near Hwy. 169 and Rockford Road.
“It’s something that’s hanging over everyone’s head,” Council Member Ginny Black, who represents the area of Plymouth that includes Four Seasons, tells the Strib. “Sometimes it’s just better to know than to have all that uncertainty out there.”
Black also says that her constituents are “overwhelmingly opposed” to a Walmart, and the Strib notes that after facing resistance from the neighborhood and a yearlong development moratorium from the City Council, the Arkansas-based retailer has decided to take its time in submitting an application to the city.
Walmart bought the 21-acre site for $10.6 million. So what's going on? Walmart's not telling.
"Though we have not submitted a proposal to the city of Plymouth," a spokeswoman writes to the paper in an email, "we are still working on plans to develop the former site of Four Seasons Mall.”
