Mankato is celebrating the news that Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. finally plans to build a long-awaited distribution center in the city, with groundbreaking possible this year, the Free Press reports.

The company expects the proposed 420,000-square-foot facility to employ about 300 new workers -- most of them full-time positions -- once the first phase of the project is completed.

“The Mankato distribution center will play an important role in Wal-Mart’s ability to serve customers in the region,” Kevin Jones, divisional vice president of supply chain, told the newspaper.

KEYC says the new distribution center is expected to begin operations in late 2015. It will be used to distribute food across the Upper Midwest.

The Arkansas-based retail giant confirmed that Mankato was the location of its next Midwest distribution center in August 2010.

Wal-Mart now has more outlets in Minnesota than its Minneapolis-based rival Target.

The discount chain also plans to build a new SuperCenter store in Cottage Grove on the site of the site of the historic Cottage View Drive-In.
