Walmart: 'We are raising the age restriction for purchase of firearms'

They're also removing toy guns that resemble assault weapons.

Much like Dick's Sporting Goods did earlier Wednesday, Walmart has announced that it is raising the age requirement to buy guns of any kind to 21 years old.

The decision comes in response to "recent events," likely the school massacre in Parkland, Florida where 14 students and 3 staff members were killed when a former student opened fire with an AR-15 rifle on Valentine's Day.

Dick's Sporting Goods wont' sell guns to anyone under 21

Walmart stopped selling modern sporting rifles, including the AR-15 in 2015, and they don't sell bump stocks, high-capacity magazines or handguns (except in Alaska).

They're also removing nonlethal airsoft guns and toys that resemble assault rifles from their website.

The changes are expected to be implemented soon.

As of Wednesday night, airsoft weapons and toys like the ones pictured below were still available on Walmart's website

The announcement made by Dick's Sporting Goods was similar, saying it will no longer sell firearms to anyone under the age of 21.

The CEO of Dick's said it's time for "common-sense gun control," and confessed that fact that the Florida school shooter bought a shotgun from one of his stores is a clear indication that current safeguards aren't enough.

Walmart echoed that sentiment, saying they will not allow the sale of a gun until a background check comes back clean. Federal law, meanwhile, allows the sale if there is no response to a background check within three business days.
