Walz, Franken work together to improve waiting game for veterans

Congressman Tim Walz and Senator Al Franken were in Rochester Friday, talking with veterans about speeding up the time it takes to receive medical and financial assistance from the Veterans Administration (VA), reports KAAL-TV.

The station says the two Minnesota lawmakers are pushing new legislation that will require the VA to award interim benefits to disabled vets whose cases are under review. The station reports there are approximately 500,000 veterans nationwide in this situation, including Michelle Smith, Retired Army Sgt. First Class.

"I was supposed to start receiving my VA benefits compensation within 60 days after leaving active duty," Smith tells KAAL-TV. "Well it's now August which is 6 months later."

Said Walz: "Let’s pay that claim now and if there's a more complicated one that takes more time to do then let’s keep working on that and pay this, what we use to do it make them wait until we got to the end."

Walz and Franken's bill has yet to get to committee, reports KAAL-TV.
