Warm weather postpones popular Eden Prairie ice castles

The Ice Castles of Eden Prairie will return in 2016, but people will have to be patient. Minnesota's warmest December on record pushed off opening day.

According to WCCO, the castles were supposed to open in Miller Park on Monday.

Brent Christensen, the founder and designer, told BringMeTheNews they're planning on opening Feb. 1 now. But he says the day they open is completely weather dependent.

Christensen says once temperatures are consistently in the teens, they should have the ice palace open to the public in just a few weeks. Right now, the walls are only a few feet tall.

The creator says his goal is to create a winter "fantasy land." He says people can expect colorful lights, icy slides, running fountains and more.

People are encouraged to purchase tickets online because the castles have a capacity limit. Adult tickets cost $9.95 on weekdays and $12.95 on weekends. Children's tickets cost $6.95 and $8.95.

Last year, the Eden Prairie castles opened Jan. 9. They had fire dancers and even a snowman resembling Olaf from Disney's "Frozen."

The castles are constructed by Utah-based Ice Castles LLC. They also build in Utah, New Hampshire and Canada. Christensen says the unseasonably warm weather impacted New Hampshire and Minnesota the most.
