A 28-year veteran of the Washington County Sheriff's Office is in the hospital after he was shot while hiking in western Wisconsin Tuesday morning.

The Pioneer Press reports Cmdr. Jerry Cusick was shot with a long-barreled shotgun as he scoped out a potential site for turkey hunting in St. Croix County.

He did not have a weapon on him at the time. The St. Croix County Sheriff's Office told the newspaper that Cusick was shot by another hunter in the area.

Cusick is at Regions Hospital listed in good condition.
