Saturday Night Live broke away from its regular cold open sketch format this weekend to address the mass shooting in Las Vegas.

Country singer Jason Aldean opened the second episode of the NBC series' 43rd season with a tribute to the victims.

Aldean was playing on stage at the Route 91 Harvest Festival when the first shots rang out last Sunday night.

By the time the shooting was over, at least 58 people were killed and 500 more were injured – including at least one person from Minnesota – making it the deadliest shooting in modern U.S. history.

"Like everyone, I'm struggling to understand what happened that night, and how to pick up the pieces and start to heal," Aldean said.

The Georgia-born singer spoke about Americans coming together in solidarity in the wake of the tragedy.

"When America is at its best, our bond and our spirit, it's unbreakable," he said.

Aldean then performed "I Won't Back Down," from Tom Petty's hit 1989 album Full Moon Fever. Petty died from cardiac arrest the day after the shooting.
