A bunch of buffalo are on the loose in central Wisconsin.

A herd of about 120 escaped an enclosure and are "running free" in the area, according to a news release from the sheriff's office.

"Due to the nature of this animals herding and stampeding characteristics this obviously causes a safety concern for the public," they said.

This is happening in southern Juneau County, which is just west of the Wisconsin Dells, essentially. (See the map at right for specifics.)

The sheriff's office specifically mentions the Union Center, Elroy and Wonewoc areas.

People around there are being told to use caution – do not approach or disturb the buffalo "in any way" if you come across them, the sheriff's office says. And keep your vehicles away from the buffalo.

Officials are working to contain and capture the animals, but the sheriff's office says it "could take some time" because of the "unique circumstances."

About 26,000 people live in Juneau County, according to Google.

There are a number of bison producers within Wisconsin – you can find a map of them here.
