Onlookers watched in horror Wednesday afternoon as a sailing boat's mast snapped in half after colliding with the Aerial Lift Bridge in Duluth.

It's unclear why the boat was sailing so close to the iconic bridge in Duluth's shipping canal, but it's clear that winds were strong at the time the video was taken.

There appeared to be 4-5 people on board the boat when it happened, and narrowly avoided falling into the water as the mast snapped.

The video, shot by Joaquin Figueroa, already has nearly 80,000 views on Facebook.

It appears to show the pilot attempting to keep the vessel away from the bridge, something they were ultimately unable to do.

Those watching from nearby Canal Park can be heard gasping as the boat and bridge collided.
