Watch: Shocking moment tornado takes down Marshalltown courthouse clock tower

The city of 27,000 people is surveying the damage after the Thursday tornado.

Shocking footage is emerging from the giant tornado that has wrought destruction in the Iowa city of Marshalltown on Thursday afternoon.

The footage below was taken by Marshalltown local Braulio Hernandez, who shared it on social media including through Twitter. 

It shows the destructive tornado sweep over the Marshalltown courthouse, bringing down the clock tower at the top of the building, to the audible gasps of those looking on.

The Iowa city, about 130 miles south of the Minnesota border, has started the process of surveying the damage.

Countless buildings, trees and power lines have been brought down across the city of just over 27,000 people.
