A "strange and dangerous" police pursuit was caught on camera in St. Paul, and authorities are now asking for help finding the suspect who was involved.
It happened early Thursday afternoon on the 900 block of Arcade Street, just south of the Payne-Phalen area. According to a news release, officers were called there to investigate a report of a man "harassing and chasing a 14-year-old girl around the neighborhood."
They soon found the suspect, who promptly ran away. The resulting chase can be seen in the video below:
As the officer ran after the suspect, a white pickup truck arrived on the scene, allowing the suspect to jump in back.
The video shows the officer jumping into the truck bed after him — and being dragged down the road as the vehicle speeds off. He then falls to the ground while the truck flees the scene.
The news release suggests that police believe the driver of the white pickup was a random passerby, though that has not been confirmed.
As for the officer, he escaped without serious injury but is recovering from "bumps, bruises and scrapes."
"Officer Morgan is tough, so he's going to be OK," Chief Todd Axtell said in the release. "But this could have ended tragically; we got lucky. It just goes to show you how quickly a seemingly ordinary call for service can take strange and dangerous turns."
"Hopefully someone out there knows who was involved and will give us a call so we can figure out why the man was chasing the 14-year-old girl and why the driver decided to help him make a break for it."
Anyone with information about the case, including the identity of the suspect, is urged to call St. Paul police at 651-266-5650.
