Water pipe break causes extensive damage at St. Anthony Main

A water pipe break has caused extensive damage to the office complex and historic buildings at St. Anthony Main in Minneapolis, KSTP-TV reports.

Authorities say the pipe broke about 3:30 a.m. and police found the street flooded when they arrived.

KARE 11 reports that the flooding was originally thought to be from a broken city water main, but Minneapolis Public Works spokesperson Heidi Hamilton clarified that it was a privately owned and maintained waterline within the St. Anthony main building.

Crews located the break and shut the water off in about 45 minutes. Water was reportedly gushing on the first floor and in the basement in one of the buildings.

Fox 9 reports water rushed into 11 businesses in the area, and some of the businesses were under as much as four feet of water at 7:30 a.m.

Some of the damaged businesses include the Aster Cafe, Prachna on Main and Segway Magical History Tours.

The Star Tribune reports this is the third major water main break in the Minneapolis in the past year.

In January, a private subcontractor working on a $70 million apartment-retail development project at Hennepin Avenue and Second Street North accidentally struck a 36-inch water main, sending 14 million gallons of water rushing through the streets.

In addition, a water main break along Nicollet Mall in August 2012 closed the busy block between 10th and 11th Streets street for several hours.

While some water main breaks are caused breaks by accident, others are blamed on the aging water pipes in the city.

In July, the Star Tribune reported that many of the water pipes in Minneapolis are nearly 100 years old.
