Water Park of America will close at the end of the month

Employees say all they know is the water park is getting new owners.

If you've been hoping to warm up in the Water Park of America's lazy river, you better do it soon. A Radisson Hotel employee told GoMN the hotel and water park will close at the end of the month.

Rumors have been circulating for a while now that the hotel might be getting new owners, and hotel employees confirmed that Tuesday. However, they didn't have any details on what exactly is happening or when it will reopen.

The Business Journal and Star Tribune say Great Wolf Resorts – a Wisconsin-based water park resort chain – plans to buy the 403-room space and turn it into rustic, cabin-themed resorts.

According to documents filed with the City of Bloomington on behalf of the company, it has plans to renovate the hotel and water park to include a bar in the water park area, a ropes course, rock wall and bowling alley.

There are also plans to move around a few guest rooms and change the finishes in rooms, inside the water park, and on the outside of the building. You can see drawings of the changes that might be coming to the eight-floor waterpark and hotel here.

New ownership might also affect who gets to use the waterpark. Water Park of America currently offers day passes, so even if you’re not staying in the hotel you can still play at the waterpark. But the Star Tribune says Great Wolf typically only allows hotel guests to use its waterparks. It’s not clear if that’ll be the case for the Bloomington location, too.

The Radisson hotel has apparently told Minnesota’s Department of Employment and Economic Development that it will lay off 132 employees at the end of the month.

Great Wolf Lodge first opened in Wisconsin Dells in 1997, and it has since grown to be one of the largest water park operators in the country, with 15 locations in the U.S. and Canada, the company’s website says. The Bloomington water park will be its first location in Minnesota, but its sixth in the Midwest.
