Resort partially reopens after water park roof collapse, but cause still unknown

No one was injured when a roof collapsed at the indoor water park at Thumper Pond Lodge in Ottertail. But officials still don't know what caused it to fall just before midnight Tuesday.

A report in the Fergus Falls Journal said it was a 120-foot section of the roof over the indoor water park that collapsed. It was outside of the park's operating hours.

About 21 rooms at the resort had been rented when the roof fell in.

KVRR added the staff at the resort is now working with forensic engineers to find out what caused the collapse.

The Thumper Pond Facebook page said the resort reopened after being cleared by the Minnesota Health Department and the Fire Marshal.

Resort manager Brad Stevens said in the post it was "very fortunate" nobody was injured.

Quoting an official from the Department of Labor and Industry, Forum News Service reports the resort was built in an area where some inspections for enforcement are not required.

Electrical, plumbing, elevator and handicap accessibility codes must be followed, but general structural and fire safety codes "are not enforced by any code official," according to Scott McLellan, director of construction codes and licensing for the state.
