An aging 16-inch water main burst in downtown Duluth late Tuesday afternoon, sending thousands of gallons of water gushing down a major downtown street and into some businesses, the Duluth News Tribune reports,

Crews working in sub-freezing temperatures responded quickly and shut off three valves that stopped the torrent on Superior Avenue, which ultimately affected several other important downtown streets.

It was the largest water pipe failure in many years, the newspaper reported. One official said the pipe could date to 1889.

The road looked more like a river, Northland's Newscenter reported. Crews hoped to have the road repaired by Thursday, the station said.
