Wave of storms expected to bring heavy rains for evening commute

"The kayak may be the preferred mode of transport home during the [afternoon] rush."

That's how meteorologist Paul Huttner is describing Monday's weather on MPR News' Updraft blog as several rounds of thunderstorms, which could produce heavy downpours and flash flooding, make their way through the state.

Multiple inches of rain are possible with the storm, which could cause localized flooding, reports say.

The storms could pop up at any time, but will likely roll into the Twin Cities in the afternoon and evening, the National Weather Service says. The storms aren't expected to be severe, but there is a slight risk of high wind and hail, Huttner notes.

Along with the rain, muggy conditions that hung around over the weekend will continue this week. Temperatures are expected to be in the 80s, which is slightly above normal, the weather service says. More storms are also possible throughout the week.

Meteorologist Paul Douglas describes this week's weather as a "temperature tango" which is "sparking a conga line of storms" throughout the state, according to a post on the Star Tribune's weather blog. Douglas notes there will also be a muggy start to the State Fair, with thunderstorms possible, especially Saturday.

A band of slow-moving storms dumped 4 to more than 7 inches of rain in western Minnesota Sunday, causing flash flooding in the area.
