Long Lake restaurant turns to drive-in movies for the summer

Birch's on the Lake will offer curbside pick-up and a drive-in movie every week.
Birch's on the Lake in Wayzata will begin showing movies in its parking lot.

With its dining room closed, Long Lake’s Birch’s on the Lake is transforming its empty parking lot into a drive-in theater for the summer.

Beginning next week, the restaurant will show Marvel movies every Wednesday night in chronological order, starting with Captain America: The First Avenger. The showings are set to run through September.

The restaurant will space out parking spots to "adhere to the social distancing orders," the restaurant said.

It will be offering food that can be ordered online for pick-up at curbside prior to the start of the movies, including 4-packs of hot dogs and popcorn.

The cost is $10 per vehicle, and tickets can be booked at birchsonthelake.com.

Drive-in restaurants like the Minnetonka Drive-in are seeing a boom in business, the Star Tribune reported last week.

“I’ve never seen it so crazy,” Minnetonka Drive-in owner Dave Bennyhoff told the newspaper. “The amount of food we’re going through is just incredible; online, telephone orders. The lot is just packed.”
