WCCO's Reg Chapman shares firsthand account of shooting on busy Minneapolis street

"Something has to change," the longtime journalist wrote in a widely shared Facebook post.

WCCO journalist Reg Chapman has shared a firsthand account of a shooting on a busy Minneapolis roadway, writing: "Something has to change."

Chapman, an award-winning reporter who joined the Twin Cities' CBS station in 2009, said he was out on assignment Monday, in a vehicle on Hennepin Avenue near the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden, when he witnessed the incident.

Someone in a vehicle shooting at a person in another vehicle, just one lane over from Chapman. Here is his full post:

His post has been shared more than 450 times, with many users expressing shock and concern — and relief nobody was injured.

The Minneapolis Police Department did receive a call about an incident matching Chapman's account, according to a spokesperson.

At around 1:50 p.m. Monday, a caller reported seeing two vehicles — a silver sedan and a brown sedan, each with two occupants — "speeding" on Lyndale Avenue, toward Hennepin Avenue.

The caller said they heard one gunshot exchanged between the vehicles, which both sped off. The person did not see the weapon, however.

Minneapolis, like most cities around the country, has seen a rise in the violent crime rate over the past 12 months. This year alone, there have been 45 homicides through July 6. There were 48 in all of 2019. In 2020, when homicide rates jumped an average of 30% across the U.S., Minneapolis saw 84 killings.
