The weather is cold, snowy and terrible in NE Minnesota

May is a few days away, but winter just doesn't want to get out of here.

Freezing rain, sleet and snow is causing problems in the northern half of Minnesota, with the Minnesota Department of Transportation's website showing many roads are partially or completely covered.

Much of central and northern Minnesota is under a winter weather advisory until 7 p.m., which has prompted officials to cancel or delay the start of school in northeastern Minnesota (the Duluth News Tribune has a list here). An ice storm warning has also been issued for the eastern half of the Arrowhead until 10 p.m.

What to expect

The National Weather Service says around a half-inch of ice is possible with this storm, and ice and snow will make roads "treacherous and impassable." The agency says "widespread" power outages are likely because the ice and snow will weigh down tree limbs and power lines. The outages "could last for days in some areas."

In northwestern Minnesota, heavy snowfall is expected to continue until about 1 p.m. Wednesday, with an area from Moorhead to Bemidji expected to pick up 2-4 inches of snow, the National Weather Service in Grand Forks tweeted.

The National Weather Service says precipitation is expected to continue through the early afternoon in the northern half of the state, before tapering off from southwest to northeast Wednesday afternoon into the evening. There may be some lingering freezing drizzle or flurries into Wednesday night, though.

Snow for the Twin Cities this weekend?

The Twin Cities may have escaped the wintry weather this time around by just getting cold rain, but there's a chance for some snow in the metro area Sunday into Monday. Some weather models are showing there's potential for 3-plus inches near the Twin Cities, the National Weather Service says.

What a perfect way to start the month of May.
