Weather outlook: Another mild week on tap

Wow, what a weekend! Temperatures soared into the upper 30s both Saturday and Sunday in the Twin Cities. Ironically, this is, climatologically speaking, the coldest time of the year with average highs at 23 degrees.

The mild weather continues this week. Look for temperatures to reach well into the 30s for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. It won't be quite as sunny as Sunday, with mostly cloudy to partly sunny skies Monday afternoon.

However, winds are going to remain rather light from the south at 5 to 10 mph, making it feel rather pleasant.

We'll see a chance of light snow Monday night, then again Tuesday afternoon. But accumulations are going to be minimal, less than one inch in most areas.

Cooler air begins to settle into the region late in the week. Afternoon highs cool into the 20s with overnight lows in the single digits and teens both Wednesday and Thursday mornings. Again, these numbers are seasonal for mid to late January.

Besides a few "skiffs" of snow here and there this week, our next best chance of accumulating snow appears to be next weekend. A more sizable clipper system slides through Minnesota bringing a better chance of fresh powder.

And just for a little perspective: Sometimes we here in the upper Midwest get a little impatient for the days to get longer. Imagine you were here:
