Schoep, the Northland dog featured in an image that drew international attention, turned 20 on Saturday, the Duluth News Tribune reported. The famous pooch got 1,000 birthday cards, the newspaper reported.

Schoep and owner John Unger of Bayfield, Wis., were the focus of a touching photo last summer that showed the two of them relaxing in Lake Superior. The image shot by Bayfield photographer Hannah Hudson was posted to Facebook and within four days had 1.8 million views, the newspaper noted.

Money poured in for Unger that allowed him to get additional care for the dog, who is arthritic as well as blind.

Schoep has good days and bad days, but his health has remained largely the same, Unger told the News Tribune.
