West-central Minnesota schools let out early due to heat

Anticipated record-breaking temperatures are causing some school districts in Minnesota to dismiss classes early Monday.

The West Central Tribune reports Willmar Public Schools, BOLD Public Schools (Bird Island and Olivia) and the Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart school district are releasing students two hours early.

KARE 11 says Willmar Community Christian School, Cedar Mountain-St. Michael-Morgan schools, Cleveland Public Schools, Milroy Schools, Red Rock Central and Wabasso Schools will also close early.

Much of the southern half of the state and western Wisconsin is under a heat advisory through 8 p.m. The National Weather Service says heat-related stress and illnesses are possible, especially for the young and elderly, along with those who work outdoors.

Temperatures in the Twin Cities are expected to reach 96 degrees, which would break a 95-degree record set in 1947, the Star Tribune reports.

A heat wave two weeks ago forced Minneapolis Public Schools to cancel classes at buildings without air conditioning.

The district said Monday that additional drinking water and fans are being provided at schools without AC, but they don't plan to let out early.

The hot and humid air will be short-lived as a cold front moves into the area Monday night, NWS said.
